Procedure
Crowns
A custom cap that restores a damaged or weakened tooth.

In short
A crown is a custom cap that covers a tooth, restoring its shape and function after major decay, a large filling, root canal treatment or a fracture. Somosot Dental fits zirconia crowns at ₱20,000. Whether a tooth needs a root canal before the crown depends on the nerve, which the examination and X-rays establish — it is not always required. A crowned tooth can still decay at the margin, so it is not a permanent solution to looking after the tooth.
Overview
A crown is a custom-made cap that fully covers a tooth, restoring its shape and function after major decay, a large filling, root canal treatment, or a fracture. Somosot Dental fits zirconia crowns, which are strong, tooth-colored restorations that resist staining.
Who may benefit
- A tooth with a large filling that's at risk of breaking
- A tooth after root canal treatment
- A cracked, worn, or badly discolored tooth
When it may not be suitable
- Too little sound tooth remains to support a crown. A build-up may be possible, or the tooth may be better replaced.
- The nerve needs treating first. That is what the examination and X-rays are for, and it changes the sequence and the cost.
- A filling would do. A crown is for a tooth at risk of breaking, not for every restoration.
Examination and records normally required
- An examination of the tooth and the bite
- The X-rays needed to assess the tooth and its nerve
- An impression or a digital scan of the prepared tooth
How Somosot Dental approaches this
- Crown work is designed in exocad and produced in the clinic's own laboratory rather than sent to an outside lab, so fit is planned digitally and adjustments are handled in-house.
- The shade is selected with you before the crown is made.
- A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is produced.
Technology at the Bohol branch
- In-house dental laboratory, with exocad design and an 8K resin printer
- Digital intraoral scanners for the scan the design is built from
Laboratory work is produced at the Bohol branch. Cases seen in Cebu are handled by the same clinic to the same specifications; ask the Cebu branch what that means for the number of visits your case needs.
Treatment stages
Preparation
The tooth is shaped to make room for the crown, and an impression or digital scan is taken.
Temporary crown
A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made.
Fitting
The custom zirconia crown is checked for fit and bite, then cemented.
Important limitations and risks
- No crown lasts forever. Lifespan depends on the supporting tooth, your bite, oral hygiene, diet, and habits such as grinding or chewing hard objects.
- A crowned tooth can still develop decay and gum disease. The crown covers the tooth; it does not protect the margin from neglect.
- A crown may need replacing if it loosens, fractures, or the tooth beneath it changes.
- ₱20,000 is the crown. Anything the tooth needs first — a root canal, a build-up — is charged separately.
What affects the price
- Whether the tooth needs root canal treatment first — ₱4,500 to ₱15,000 depending on the tooth.
- Whether a build-up or post is needed to support the crown.
- How many teeth are being crowned.
Pricing

Aftercare
- Avoid chewing very hard or sticky foods, particularly while wearing a temporary crown
- Brush normally and clean carefully around the crown margin
- Floss as instructed, especially around a temporary crown
- Return if the crown becomes loose, fractures, causes persistent discomfort, or feels high when biting
- A crowned tooth can still develop decay or gum disease, so continued oral hygiene and regular dental evaluation are necessary
When to contact the clinic without waiting
- The crown becoming loose or coming off
- The crown fracturing
- Persistent discomfort, or the tooth feeling high when you bite
Frequently asked questions
How long does a crown last?
Zirconia crowns are strong, tooth-colored restorations that resist staining and can last for many years with proper care. However, no crown lasts forever. Its lifespan depends on the supporting tooth, your bite, oral hygiene, diet, and habits such as grinding or chewing hard objects.
Will it match my other teeth?
Zirconia crowns are shade-matched to blend with the surrounding teeth. Your dentist will select the shade with you before the crown is made.
Do I need a root canal before a crown?
Not always — it depends on whether the tooth's nerve is affected. Your dentist will advise after an examination and the required X-rays.
